Charles of the ritz powders a la carte Granny drawstring bags for shoes & lingerie

It’s amazing what charles of the ritz powders a la carte one can unearth while spring cleaning. Not rags mind you. These are totally brand new and unused lying in one of the old chests. They were purchased during one of my trips to Vietnam and they haven’t even turned yellow. Not bad huh? The designs are so pretty I couldn’t bear to use them and hence, kept them in that chest and subsequently clean forgotten about them.

Anyway, I bought a couple of such bags and I used them pretty extensively at one stage. They’re useful for travel purposes but nice as keepsakes too. I especially like the intricate embroidery designs.

Check out this cute embroidered panty design. So cute! It’ll be nice to wear a real panty that looks so sweet.

And the design comes complete with a bra top too. I spotted some designs like this at Esty.com and they cost around US$15 onwards. Think you can find some of these selling at Takashimaya? Maybe someone can confirm.

This is one lingerie bag that I like and used to put some of my unused charles of the ritz powders a la carte lingerie. Don’t ask my why I still keep unused lingerie. I just do.

The thing with these white shoe bags is that while they’re pretty, they get dirty real fast when you start using them to bag your shoes. The inside gets all dirty and I don’t believe in washing them because it just ruin the embroidery. So yeah, now I remember why I bought a few of these bags. To save on the laundry really.

Loreal colour fresco refreshing creme eye shadow Where else should you exfoliate besides your face?

We all loreal colour fresco refreshing creme eye shadow know that regular exfoliation like once or twice a week removes dead skin cells on the epidermis that can result in a clearer, smoother and more even-toned skin on our face. But besides our face, are there other parts of our body that we should also be exfoliating by physically scrubbing those areas with mircobeads and microdermabrasion?

Your lips
I remember when I first discussed this, some readers asked why and I explained that regular exfoliation keeps the lips smooth, supple and less flaky. You will find your lipstick applies better too.  Your regular face scrub might be too rough for the lips and so it is advisable to use something with fine beads. Some people exfoliate their lips using a toothbrush or washcloth. I have found through my experience that a cleanser containing both beta hydroxy acid (BHA) and alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) with fine exfoliating beads worked extremely well for my lips. Or you can try a homemade lip exfoliant out of aspirin and fine sugar!

Your neck
I try to extend my weekly exfoliation to my neck region to remove the dead skin cells so as to keep the tone of my neck close to my face although is still noticeably different because I don’t use the skin lightening products that I use on my face on my neck.  However, at least with regular exfoliation, the color of my neck is not too dark.  I know some people use their body scrubs on their neck but I find them too rough and hence, I exfoliate using normal facial scrubs instead.  I use a variety but a regular that I use is the Cure Natural Aqua Gel In addition, I try to do a face and neck mask after every exfoliation so as to keep the skin well moisturized.  Anyway, it’s a good idea to use treatments after exfoliation as the skin is better able to absorb the goodies after the dead skin are all scrubbed off.

Your body
I believe many of you scrub your body regularly.  Some with commercial exfoliants, while others may use homemade scrubs.  There are probably others who loreal colour fresco refreshing creme eye shadow prefer to use just a loofah or washcloth as these are much gentler and you can use them daily. Personally, I use a combination of commercial and homemade body scrubs.  If you use sunscreen regularly, then exfoliation is important so as not to have your pores clogged by the sunscreen ingredients.

Your armpits
How many of you can wear a sleeveless tee and raise your arms with confidence?  Well, if your armpits are hairless but looking dark, it could be due to the accumulated residue from your perspiration and deodorant or anti-perspirant.  Regular exfoliation is necessary to rid the residue and keep the area clean looking.  In fact, regular exfoliation may help remove ingrown hair as the action removes dead skin cells from the surface layer of your skin, thereby releasing hairs that may be trapped under the skin’s surface. Because that part of your body is slightly more delicate, so you might want to consider using your facial scrub or a loofah instead of your body scrub.

Your elbows & knees
When exfoliating your body, focus on your elbows and knees.  Your regular body wash or soap are probably not doing a good job of keeping those areas too good looking and so, it’s a good idea to give them a regular scrub. Recently, I noticed that my knee was feeling rough and I realized that it has been awhile since I scrubbed that area.  After I diligently did so twice in a week, they felt noticeably smoother.

Your feet & heels
Another area much neglected is our feet and heels.  If you frequently patronize a nail salon for pedicure, then this  isn’t much of a concern.  For others who do not, remember to extend your body scrub to your feet and heels as well.  While pumice stone is always cited as a good tool to exfoliate those rough heels, I don’t really like to use that frequently.  So I rely on scrubs instead.  You might want to try my DIY hot salt scrub recipe or purchase the readily available Bliss Hot Salt Scrub from Sephora for this purpose!

Your cuticles
Sounds strange?  Well, actually our hands do not need much exfoliation since we are always washing them.  However, dead skin do accumulate around the cuticles and personally, I’m not in favor of loreal colour fresco refreshing creme eye shadow cutting them.  I prefer to “push” them to keep them looking tidy and then use  the Cure Natural Aqua Gel to get rid of excess dead skin buildup.  As for the cuticles on my toes, they are already taken care of with the feet scrub I use.

Okay, have I left out any critical area?  And how diligent are you in scrubbing some of these areas I’ve mentioned?

Moisturizing soap Review: MADARA Ecoface 3-step skin care range

Helen of Pure Tincture had asked me to try MADARA Ecoface range of skin care since early last year but I declined then due to my acne issues. Since the acne has cleared, I’m more ready to try new products and that’s how I started on using this range about a month ago. The MADARA range of products including skin and body care products are certified by Ecocert and made in Latvia, a small country in Northern Europe in the Baltic region. According to the literature from the company, their products are made with cleavers green flowering plants with tiny white blossoms and starry leaves that are especially rich Moisturizing soap with active substances and extracts because these plants are forced to concentrate all of their energy on the short blossoming period as Northern summers are shorter and harsher.

As a whole, the ingredients are pretty agreeable to me. The only ingredient that I had some initial concerns were the alcohol even though it is natural ethyl alcohol or ethanol derived from grains. But I decided to cast that concern aside and agreed to test three of the products sent to me on a complimentary basis – MADARA FACE Deep Purifying Foam, MADARA FACE Deep Balance Toner and MADARA FACE Deep Moisture Fluid.

MADARA FACE Deep Purfying Foam 150ml S$39

Ingredients: Aqua, Rosa Damascena (Rose) Distillate*, Sodium Cocoamphoacetate, Alcohol, Glycerin*, Surcose Cocoate, Achillea Millefolium (Yarrow) Extract*, Hypericum Perforatum (St. John’s Wort) Extract*, Calendula Officinalis (Calendula) Extract*, Chamomilla Recutita (Camomile) Extract* *Ingredients issued from Organic Agriculture.

This is a best seller in their slate and I can see why. It cleanses well and smells wonderful. It cleanses away light makeup but you will definitely need to double cleanse. So since it is a foam cleanser, I use this only in the mornings as I find it quite a waste to use for double cleansing. No tight or taut feeling after cleansing and face is soft and smooth afterwards.

MADARA FACE Deep Balance Toner 200ml S$32

Ingredients: Aqua, Rosa Damascena (Rose) Distillate*, Alcohol, Glycerin*, Rubus Idaeus (Raspberry) Extract*, Cucumis Sativus (Cucumber) Extract*, Plantago Major (Plantain Leaf) Extract*, Chamomilla Recutita (Camomile) Moisturizing soap Extract* *Ingredients issued from Organic Agriculture.

Helen picked this toner for me because I have combination skin and when I first started since it, I thought my face felt dry. It was after the second usage that I realized it was a tightening effect as this has an effect of tightening the pores of our skin.

MADARA FACE Deep Moisture Fluid 50ml S$55

Ingredients: Ingredients: Aqua, Alcohol, Rosa Damascena (Rose) Distillate*, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Oil*, Glycerin*, Rubus Idaeus (Raspberry) Extract*, Cetearyl Alcohol, Tilia Cordata (Linden) Extract*, Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Oil*, Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Butter*, Cetearyl Glucoside, Titanium Dioxide*** (CI 77891), Trifolium Pratense (Red Clover) Extract*, Artemisia Vulgaris (Mugwort) Extract*, Capryloyl Glycine, Stearic Acid, Mica (CI 77019)***, Sodium Hyaluronate, Xantan Gum, Potassium Hydroxide***, Aroma**, Citral**, Eugenol**, Limonene**, Linalool** *Ingredients issued from Organic Agriculture, **natural essential oils; *** inorganic substances and/or pure mineral pigments.

Usually I don’t like moisturizers because my preference is to use oil. However, this is fluid and not creamy and hence, is rather light for my combination skin. I didn’t feel much hydration but I would agree it Moisturizing soap softens the skin. I think my makeup looks quite nice on top of this moisturizer. The only thing is that it doesn’t have any SPF (but contains titanium dioxide) and so I still use my MVO sunscreen on top of this and now I know why some of you are complaining that it’s hard to blend the sunscreen. I had the same issue using it with this moisturizer. In the end, I just patted on the sunscreen.

Overall summary
I was surprised at how much I like this range of MADARA Ecoface Face care series. First of all, the clean product packaging gets my attention and are user friendly. Second, the three products all smell very pleasant like plant extracts. Finally, they are easy to use and even though they contain grain alcohol, they do not dry up my skin – but I still wish they don’t have this ingredient at all. My skin did not break out using the products and I would describe the overall feeling as “just nice” for my combination skin. I also think the price is fairly reasonable and not pricey – something to recommend for daily skin care routine. Perhaps I might move on to try some of their cosmetics in time.

Availability
MADARA Ecoface range, which includes Moisturizing soap products for face and body, are available at Pure Tincture, a company based in Singapore but offers international shipping. For more information, check out their website.

What do I like to see in a product packaging?

Those who follow Viva Woman on Facebook may have noticed that I’ve started “exposing” products that claim to be organic but do not appear so based on their ingredient list. So yes, while I am no expert in reading the ingredient list but it is the first thing I look at when I am considering if I should test or purchase a product. I hate it when the ingredient list are not reader friendly and printed in really small prints. And because I’m into natural and organic products, information like expiry date is also very important. Today, I’ll share with you some of the good packaging practice I’ve come across recently. Hopefully, more manufacturers will take note of such details when marketing their skin care products.

Simplify the ingredient list
I have no idea what is persea gratissima oil but I do know avocado oil. I love ingredients that are easy to understand and I was really impressed by the ingredient listing on Pai Fragonia & Sea Buckthorn Instant Hand Therapy Cream. A side of the box was dedicated to the ingredients and while jargons were employed, they were explained and even though I may not know each ingredient, I know it looks pretty natural at a glance.

Unclutter the ingredient list
I appreciate manufacturers who bother to list the ingredients boldly at a section of the product such that I can always refer to it easily. Marie Veronique Organics does a good job of this on all their products with lots of white space and no clutter.  This makes it so reader friendly.

Highlight the active ingredients prominently
This is particularly important for sunscreens. Many a times, the active ingredients are buried in the entire list that it will have to take an expert to pick them out. I know the active ingredients of sunscreens but I don’t necessary know them by their variations. In fact, I sometimes have to run a search just to be sure. Hence, those brands that bother to list their active ingredients clearly complete with the percentage gets my thumbs up. Many mineral sunscreens follow this format and an example is the Vive Sana Solar to Polar Ultra Sun Care I reviewed recently.

List key benefits clearly
While description is good but in today’s context where we are always inundated with lots of information on a daily basis, basic design elements should be employed in product packaging. The easier I can understand the product properties, the higher the probability of purchasing that product. The Thursday Plantation products do quite an effective job using this technique through simple bullet points.

Emphasize the key information creatively
Most natural and organic products will highlight what they do not contain. Some do it better than others. One good example I’ve come across is Suntegrity All Natural Moisturizing Body Protection SPF30 where ingredients the product do not contain are highlighted within a box and the word NO is printed in reversed white. I find that really neat and effective.

Print clear and specific best by date
This is not only important for natural and organic products but all other products as well. It irritates me to find only batch numbers printed on a product packaging and most of the time, these batch numbers are in secret codes that are absolutely impossible to decode. And that little icon which tells me the product is good for 6 months or 12 months after opening is also useless to me if I don’t know when the product was manufactured. So I appreciate products with either manufacturing date or used by date clearly indicated to facilitate my purchasing decision.

Be honest and transparent
I don’t think I’m being picky or fussy here. I believe many of you place emphasis on the information that is printed on the product packaging. Granted that there is a cost involved in doing all these things but most of such costs are passed on to the consumers anyway so why not do a better job out of it. And for goodness sake, please stop using labels like “certified organic” when your products clearly aren’t so. Honesty is always the best policy!

Clarins soft shimmer eye colour Share: how long is your daily skin care routine?

I don’t know if you’ve heard this expression but it’s quite a common one here in Singapore meant for people who spend a long time in the toilet, whatever it is they maybe doing. Another laughable one I came across from my mom is “oh, she’s pulling out all her clarins soft shimmer eye colour intestines to wash and then stuffing them back”. And I was like (o_o). I don’t stay with my mom now so I don’t know what she’ll say if she finds out that I spend like 30 minutes each morning to prep my skin and hair. That’s probably well too long by her standard.

So what is my 30 minutes spent on? Well, I wake up around 6am daily and as most of you know, that time of the morning is cold!

First 20 minutes
- soak under warm running water to get my system ready
- shampoo my hair, sometimes twice
- condition my hair, leaving the conditioner on for a minute
- bathe, bathe, bathe
- wash my face once
- massage my face for 1 to 2 minutes

Next 5 minutes
- towel my face dry
- towel my body dry
- spritz my face with toner, leaving it dripping for a minute
- brush my hair, prepping it for blow drying
- pat the toner dry
- tap eye cream around eye area
- apply face oil or moisturizer on face & neck
- apply sunscreen on face

Last 5 minutes
- blow and style my hair
- apply deodorant
- apply body moisturizer, mainly on arms and legs
- put on clothes

In the evening, I don’t wash my hair again and so the routine is really much shorter and that includes taking a shower; probably takes me around 15 minutes because I have additional skin clarins soft shimmer eye colour care needs for the night.

So how long is your daily skin care routine? Care to share?

Deep blue Lapis Lazuli handmade jewelry set

I’ve been gifted with a number of goodies lately and one of them came from my bestie. She has always been making handmade jewelry and recently decided to embark on a new project, in which she acquired quite a lot of Lapis Lazuli semi precious stones from Afghanistan. So she made me a set of simple necklace with earrings to match out of the deep blue stones and 925 silver.

Matching ring
Blue is not a color I wear that often. In fact I have a pair of blue earrings that I bought a year ago but haven’t the opportunity to wear because it matches none of my apparel. However, because these are such deep blue, they go quite well with some of my dresses. And I realized, I have a matching ring that I bought from Bali some years ago to match!

A holy and imperial stone
Lapis Lazuli was apparently, a holy stone. In ancient times, Lapis Lazuli was known as Sapphirus, and I understand that the Ten Commandments were carved on tablets of Sapphire, which was allegedly Lapis Lazuli. It was also said that God’s throne is also carved from this rock. Lapis lazuli is also an age-old material in China, having a history of over 2400 years and used exclusively by the imperial family.

Okay, holy or imperial, I love this jewelry set. Simple but serves me very well. If you like to see more of my friend’s work, check her blog here. She’s into creating her own silver and gold jewelry from scratch too and I will share them when I get a chance.

Estee lauder pure color eyeshadow duo Don’t sweat the makeup if you perspire buckets

Do you perspire a lot? Well, I don’t. But I do know that perspiration, when combined with makeup, isn’t good news for our skin. In fact, it estee lauder pure color eyeshadow duo may result in pimples and in some instances, something call sweat acne. So perhaps it’s a good idea not to use makeup when you’re into any of the following activities:

1.When you are exercising or working out intensively
Makeup, especially thick foundation will melt and combine with the sweat to block pores and cause blemishes. This is sometimes referred to as sweat acne. It is really better to cleanse off makeup before exercising or if you really need to use makeup, apply it thinly or use loose powder or mineral makeup, which allows your skin to breathe better.

2. When you are in a hot sauna or steam bath
I don’t fancy sauna but I know some people like it because they claim it refreshes them. Or perhaps some indulge in sauna in the hope of losing some fats. What I do know is that you’ll perspire a lot when you’re in a sauna and hence, your makeup is going to melt and when that happens, it’s going to cause problems of estee lauder pure color eyeshadow duo block pores too. Some women may forget that they’re wearing makeup and forget to remove prior to going into the steam room. Well, this is why it’s always good to check the mirror often!

3. When you are out frolicking under the hot sun
Obviously, this is going to cause your makeup to melt in particular if you have oily skin. Hence, if you’re going to be out under the sun for prolonged period, then just skip the makeup but slather lots of sunscreen instead. And there’s always that pair of sunnies to help shield some of your uneven skin tone.

4. When you are doing housework
Okay, this is a bit ridiculous but I’m telling you as it has happened to me. I sometimes come back from work and proceed straight into my household chores, forgetting to cleanse my face before. I mean, I thought it made more sense for me to bathe afterwards. A few times I’ve noticed, my skin developed some small red bumps on the side of my face, where I tend to drip with perspiration. They were not pimples but noticeable enough. So now I know, it’s better to cleanse my face before doing my housework!

5. When you are eating estee lauder pure color eyeshadow duo a steamboat buffet and there is no aircon
I read an account from this local DJ who went for a steamboat buffet at a public foodcourt with no aircon and found her pores enlarged and her skin texture really rough like the sandpaper afterwards because a fan was blowing all the hot steam into her face. She later realized that the combination of heat and perspiration had taken a toll on her skin as she was wearing rather thick makeup during the buffet and it took a few days for her skin to be returned to normal. So the combination of heat, perspiration and makeup can be disastrous!

Well, I know I’m going to have steamboat estee lauder pure color eyeshadow duo buffet during the Chinese New Year. But I’m going to make sure that I don’t have the heat blown into my face for sure!

Biotherm line peel serum anti wrinkle booster instant action 1 01 oz It’s Thursday & let’s bring on Thursday Plantation

I know. That’s a corny title but come on, if it’s Thursday today, the weekend is just around the corner! Heh. But certainly, Thursday Plantation is anything but corny. In fact, you might like to know that Thursday Plantation is the world’s first scientifically developed Tea Tree plantation located in Bungawalbin Basin, Australia. I didn’t even know that they have a full range of products that are said to be naturally derived; free from parabens, petrochemicals, propylene glycol, laurly sulphates, polysorbates, synthetic fragrances, synthetic colours and animal derived ingredients with biotherm line peel serum anti wrinkle booster instant action 1 01 oz at least 70 per cent certified organic. I used to see their tea tree oil in the pharmacies here and did recommend the product to a few readers even though I’ve not tried it myself. Well, the reason was that I used to get my source of tea tree oil from another supply.

Recently, I noticed that they’ve expanded the range to include a few more products and was thinking of getting them when their media representative contacted me about reviewing their products. So I said yes and shortly after, received four items complimentary from the company – Tea Tree Oil, Tea Tree Blemish Gel, Tea Tree Daily Face Wash and Tea Tree Dry Skin Relief.

Thursday Plantation Tea Tree Oil 10ml S$13.80
Because I still have like two bottles of tea tree oil on hand, and so I did not try this oil at all. What I’ve learnt is that this is a naturally sourced antiseptic containing 100% pure Tea Tree Oil. Said to be the first brand to exceed the International Quality standards for tea tree oil, this product has superior antiseptic properties and provides great antibacterial and antifungal biotherm line peel serum anti wrinkle booster instant action 1 01 oz actions. Hence, you can use it to aid healing of minor wounds, skin irritations, cuts, scratches and insect bites. A drop of two of the oil can also be added to your regular shampoo to help with dandruff control. I’ve been using tea tree oil to help with some of my acne issues but I find it best for controlling skin itches and also body odor. I sometimes add two drops to my baking soda mix, which I use as a natural deodorant. The smell is no doubt very strong but it also dissipates pretty quickly.

Rating: none because I didn’t try it.

Thursday Plantation Tea Tree Blemish Gel 25g S$10.55

Ingredients: Purified Water, Polysorbate 60, Melaleuca Alternifolia/Tea Tree (Melaleuca Alternifolia) Oil, Alcohol, Isopropyl Myristate, Carbomer, Triethanolamine, Camphor, Limonene.

I hardly use blemish sticks. Perhaps the last one I used was from Lavera but because I can’t find the product anymore, I’m just using my oils to control my acne. What’s good about this blemish stick is that it is formulated without Benzoyl Peroxide and hence, it is more gentle. I can’t say that it is very effective for me because I applied it a few times to a pimple on my forehead, I noticed that while the pimple did subside and dried up a little, it didn’t heal quite as fast as when I use my usual oils. But it might work better for others and since it’s so affordable, there’s no harm giving it a shot if you’re looking for a blemish gel.

Rating: 3 out of 5

Thursday Plantation Tea Tree Daily Face Wash 150ml S$18.35
I was slightly hesitant about trying this product because tea tree based products can be quite drying. However, I gave it a shot anyway. This is a foam cleanser that comes in a pump bottle. Pretty neat, considering foam cleansers are easy to use. It has a strong tea tree smell but otherwise, cleanses well and did not dry up my skin. The smell is strong but it did leave my skin feeling very refreshed though. I don’t have too much of acne issues these days so I can”t say if this can really help combat acne and pimples but going by the formulation, is probably good for acne prone skin type. Perhaps someone else who is using this can substantiate my guess. Anyway, after using this for awhile, I passed this on to a girlfriend’s daughter with pimple issues and hence, I do not have the ingredient list on hand to feature here.

Rating: 4 out of 5

Thursday Plantation Dry Skin Relief 200ml S$17.45

Ingredients: Water, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Jice, Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Extract, Cetyl Alcohol, Glyceryl Stearate, Glycerin, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Stearic Acid, Melaleuca Aternifolia (Tea biotherm line peel serum anti wrinkle booster instant action 1 01 oz Tree) Leaf Oil, Macadamia Integrifolia Seed Oil, Xantham Gum. Lonicera Caprifolium (Honeysuckle) Flower Extract, Lonicera Japonica (Honeysuckle) Flower Extract, Lavandua Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil, Tocopheryl Acetate, Linalool, Limonene.

This one I like a lot because it does what it claims. I had a bout of itchy skin on both my arms, perhaps due to the non-foaming body wash I was using and this cream provided immediate relief. It’s not oily or greasy and is easy to apply but I don’t like the tea tree smell as it was pretty overwhelming since I applied on a large area. But fortunately, the smell dissipates quite quickly and so it wasn’t so unbearing.

The Thursday Plantation product range appears great for those with acne or problematic skin type. Another pro is that the range is affordable and easily available at the leading pharmacies. In terms of formulation, it also comes across as gentler compared to what is usually available for acne care in the market so definitely something to consider if you have some sort of skin issues. Besides these four I’ve reviewed, you can also find the Tea Tree Cream at S$22.15, the Tea Tree Refreshing Body Wash at S$17.45, the Tea Tree Organic Soap at S$7.35. I’m looking forward to trying the body wash if the smell is bearable enough and also hoping that the company can bring more of their other range, which I spotted on their website.

Have you tried any of the biotherm line peel serum anti wrinkle booster instant action 1 01 oz products from Thursday Plantation? Any comments?

Lancome color ideal precise match skin perfecting pressed powder 31 oz Viva Challenge: change your pillow case regularly

Hey hey VivaBellas! It’s been quite awhile since we’ve done a challenge here so let’s kick off with the first in the series this year. Let’s begin with an easy one – something related to sleep. But no worries, I’m not going to challenge you to lancome color ideal precise match skin perfecting pressed powder 31 oz go to bed by 10pm nightly or am I going to insist that you sleep on your back to minimize wrinkles although these are really great beauty tips. In fact, for this challenge, you don’t even have to do anything much. Maybe all you need to do is to open your mouth to ask someone to do it for you.

Yes, as the title suggests, I’m just asking you to change your pillow case regularly. Easy peasy right? Just dump it in the washing machine to spin. And I’m not going to be excessive by asking you to wash your pillow case daily but how about every week if you’ve got some skin issues or every other week if your face is not too problematic?

Well, this challenge is more applicable to those who are still unable to train themselves to sleep on their backs. Obviously, if you sleep on your sides, your face is going to come lancome color ideal precise match skin perfecting pressed powder 31 oz into contact with your pillow all the time so let’s keep the pillow case clean! This is important especially for those with acne issues. If you have a lot of pimples on the sides of your face, well, maybe you should be examining your pillow case now.

So will you take up this challenge for your face’s sake?

I‘m not going to tell you how frequent I change mine but I sleep on my back and the back of my head don’t grow pimples. Heh.

Cover girl foundation makeup Review: Vive Sana Solar to Polar Ultra Sun Care

Although I have my own favorite mineral-based sunscreen, I’m still very keen to test new ones especially if they’re readily available in Singapore. So when I spotted this Vive Sana cover girl foundation makeup Solar to Polar Ultra Synthetic-Free Sun Care with SPF40 at Pure Tincture, and the ingredients looked fairly agreeable to me, I wrote to Helen requesting for a sample to try. I’ve been alternating this with my usual sunscreen for a few weeks now and am ready to share my thoughts on it.

Ingredients
This mineral sunscreen is described as 100% natural with 70%+ certified organic ingredients and is free of phthalate, parabens, PABA and petroleum. It has an SPF of 40, and the combination of 8.5% Titanium Dioxide and 3.5% Zinc Oxide means it is able to provide broad spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB rays. Generally, I avoid using face care products with beewax but because this is a mineral-based sunscreen, which means the ingredients are to protect the skin by forming a barrier externally, I rationalized that it is okay to use as long as I cleanse well afterwards.

Active Ingredients: Titanium Dioxide 8.5%, Zinc Oxide 3.5%. Everything else: Organic Soybean Oil, Organic Safflower Oil, Beeswax, Organic Olive Oil, Organic Avocado Oil, Organic Jojoba Seed Oil, Alumina (natural mineral), Stearic Acid (natural fatty acid), Organic Apricot Kernel Oil, Organic Glycerin, Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Sunflower Seed Oil, Ginkgo Biloba Leaf Extract, Oat Kernel Extract, Green Tea Leaf Extract, Chamomile Extract, Raspberry Seed Oil, Natural Green Tea Fragrance.

Texture, application and smell
Texture wise, this is creamy and because it contains a number of nourishing and moisturizing oils plus beewax, so it does feel kind of rich on application on my combination skin. Not terribly greasy compared to some of the others I’ve tried and the greasiness does disappear a little after awhile but I definitely need to apply some powder over to give my face a more mattifying feel. The product has a very mild scent with the combination of oils but it’s not unpleasant. The good thing I like about Vive Sana Solar to Polar Ultra Sun Care is that it does not leave a whitecast on application. I tried the product on my hands, which are darker in skin tone than my face and I couldn’t see any whitecast.

Product packaging and price
Said to cover girl foundation makeup be environmentally friendly as it is coral reef & ocean safe, plus it uses sustainable US packaging, this product comes in a 2.25oz tin tube. Personally I don’t fancy tin tubes too much because they look a sight after all the squeezing. The tube actually looks kind of small for the price of S$50 but if you’re just using this for the face, it should last you quite awhile.

Overall summary
This product can double up as a face moisturizer as it does not leave a whitecast. I initially used it on top of a moisturizer and it proved too rich as I broke out with a pimple on my forehead. My skin was okay when I used this alone. My skin is combination and so I can only use a thin layer and hence, I don’t think I’m getting all the SPF40 protection. Those with oily skin type are likely to find this too rich for their skin type too. Hence, I think this product is more suitable for those with normal or dry skin as the ingredients are not only moisturizing but full of antioxidant goodness. Or if you’re currently using a physical sunblock that is kind of too rich but you’re using it because you can’t find something naturally formulated and better in texture, then this might work for you. For more details, check out the product here.

Cover girl foundation makeup

You wont get wrinkles unless you use heavy heavy cakedcaked on foundation.
And even if you do.
It takes years to get wrinkles from that.
Anyway make up is not a an issue for a 13 year old girl to wear.
Make sure you apply it properly.
However if you use your makeup in moderation you shouldnt have to worry about the wrinkles.
The key to make up is to make it look like your not wearing any.
You dont want to cover up your natural beauty by over doing it with the makeup

Share: do you love for lather & foam in shower?

I am not liking this Burt’s Bees Baby Bee Shampoo & Wash at all. It doesn’t smell good and doesn’t foam at all. And what really got on my nerve is that I’ve been buying this product for over a year and it didn’t used to be like that. The older formulation had a delicious scent and foamed very well. Even when the scent changed a little to smell more like a dog shampoo, it still foamed well. I wasn’t even aware that this is a different formulation till I started using it because saved for that little word “new”, I thought this is the same product I used to buy and so I just grabbed and paid without examining it. Okay, okay, I missed the big words “Fragrance Free” too! (-_-)

Yesh, I know the product is for babies – I was using it on my son.  Even babies can do with a little foam and smell can’t they? So I can’t find a reason why the older formulation needs to be replaced because it was already very gentle.  If this is a totally different formulation, then for goodness sake, give it a brand new packaging! And as a matter of fact, I can’t even find this so-called new formulation made with aloe and oat flour mentioned on their website. It’s a total waste of money because my son doesn’t want to be bathed in this and so no guesses for who has ended up using it.  It comes with a mild scent that I don’t fancy and it really doesn’t foam at all.

Foaming equals cleansing
I don’t think I’m very far off by saying most people equate non-foaming with non-cleansing. Due to how we’ve all been conditioned to feel, products that lather and foam somehow come across as being able to cleanse our skin and hair better because they tend to leave behind a clean, squeaky and refreshing sensation after they’ve been rinsed off. But we’ve also learnt that products that foam too much may contain harsh chemicals like SLS or SLES, which will strip off our natural lipids. So thank goodness these days, we have more cleansers made that are free from such harsh chemicals and yet are able to foam pretty well.

Non-foaming facial cleansers and shampoos
With facial cleansers, I think I can still tolerate the idea of a non-foaming formulation but it’s really not my preference to use them. They’re always said to be very mild and in my experience, okay to be used during the mornings but I don’t really find they cleanse off grime and dirt that well for me and I need at least two or sometimes three washes. As for shampoos, I’ve already made my stand in my entry “Do foam free shampoos work at all?” that I do not like those that do not foam as I don’t find that they cleanse my oily scalp very well, even after a second wash.  So what about shower gels?

Non-foaming and non-smelling shower gels
Hey, showering to me is both an unwinding and refreshing process.  Unless you’re sensitive to smell, I believe most people prefer to soak themselves in some soothing or sweet scent so what’s with fragrance free?  A little bit of smell from pure essential oils or botanical extract is not going to hurt is it? (Okay, fragrance free probably refer to those artificial fragrance.) And really, the more copious, lubricious and dense the foam, the cleaner I feel.  I like the idea of feeling clean and fresh after a bath and not wondering if I’m smelling musty or something!  Okay, I’m exaggerating a little here but you get the idea. Truly, sud free is okay in the mornings because I’m not dirty at all but after an entire day out under the hot weather, it’s another story altogether.  Plus, such non-foaming cleansers do nothing to get rid of the sunscreen I slather on my arms. Actually I was using the Natralia Nourish Naturals Dry Skin Wash prior to this and I was not griping so much. I guess I am just frustrated with the constant change in Burt’s Bees packaging that is thoroughly confusing IMO.

Anyway, I’m really curious.  How many of you don’t like your shower gels to lather or smell at all? If so, is there a particular reason?

Chic & trendy quilted handbags from cinda b

If you love quilted handbags and totes, then you might have caught sight of the cinda b range that were launched recently at Isetan Scotts, Tangs Orchard and Metro Paragon. The bags, priced from S$29, are designed and made in USA, and come in a variety of styles in fashion-forward prints and colors. I haven’t been keen on quilted bags really because those I’ve seen came across as slightly frumpy to me but I’ll say this range looks contemporary and chic. In fact, I received a number of compliments from my friends who spotted me in my new bags that the company sent me for a review.

cinda b mini hobo
Although I normally love totes because they’re so roomy and easy to use, I picked two smaller bags from the range. One is a Sweetleaf Pink Mini Hobo you see in the picture above. I gotta say the pink is gorgeous! Even my husband thought it’s pretty. Since it’s a mini, it means I can’t dump my entire bag organizer in there. However, it’s still roomy enough for most of my essentials, my umbrella and a small book. And though I can’t put my bag organizer in there, I can still organize some of my stuff properly in the bag with its four interior pockets. So no need for too much rummaging!

cinda b city satchel
At first glance, this bag looks pretty small too but surprise…it’s a good size as my entire bag organizer can fit in just nicely! So I’ll say this satchel is very functional as transferring bags becomes a real breeze. Aside from the interior pockets, I also like that this one comes with two convenient exterior pockets that allow me to fit some of my small items in them for easy access. I picked the Ravinia Ivory fabric because I’ve always wanted a white bag and this one is washable!

cinda b wrap-a-round clutch
This is a wristlet clutch that is great when you don’t have a need for a big bag but still need to take along your little essentials. I actually find such clutches are great for grocery shopping but for this one, I think it’s too glam looking for that purpose. More like something to take along for a night out. This measures 10.5″ x 5.5″ and the wrist strap is detachable so you can also use it just as a clutch if you like.

cinda b coin + camera
This little pouch didn’t impress upon me that it can hold my camera as mine is a little fat but again, I was surprised that it can! I can’t take a picture to show you because I don’t have a spare camera. However, I’m not going to use this to hold my camera nor my coins. Instead I’m going to use this to hold some of my important IDs and keys as it’s a good size for those working essentials.

Promotion and contest
I rather like this range of bags as the designs are fashionable enough and the quality is pretty good as the bags, made with poly/nylon fabrics that are not only durable, but water and stain resistant. Besides what you see here, you can also find totes, travel bags, baby bags, iPhone cases and cosmetic pouches in the range. As mentioned, prices of the bags start from S$29 and for a limited period now, you can enjoy a 10% discount off the range retailing at Tangs Orchard & Metro Paragon. For more designs of the bags, check out the cinda b facebook page. It’s a good idea to become a fan of their Facebook page because I understand the company is going to give away a handbag set including a City Satchel, Coin+Camera and Small cosmetic bag worth S$249 real soon. So become a fan, stalk the page and maybe you want to start taking pictures of your ugly or worn out handbag too! *wink*

I’ve also uploaded more pictures of the bags and accessories I’ve received on the Viva Woman Facebook page so head over to take a good look on them!

DIY Beauty: fix your beauty with that cooking oil

Some readers had responded to my post of yesterday on my Facebook page instead and amongst them, Hui Hui, who was sharing her must-have beauty item in her bag mentioned something interesting about using extra virgin olive oil as her lip balm.

…try using extra virgin olive oil as lip balm.. it is natural, effective and it is not harmful even if you swallow it! Cheap & effective! It cured my REALLY dry chapped lips last time.

Yes, truly. Extra virgin olive oil or EVOO for short, is not just good for cooking, it is great as a beauty fix too! And there are so many ways you can use this kitchen oil, just straight from the bottle!

Lip balm and cuticle moisturizer on the go
Other than being used as a lip balm, you can also rub some into your dry cuticles. Some people may find it a chore to use this, thinking it’s difficult to carry it around. Well, it’s a chore if you’re thinking of carrying the entire big bottle around but you can transfer some of the oil into those small plastic dispensers, like what you see in the picture, which makes it easy to bring the oil around. I got mine from Sasa and it’s so handy.

Dry hands savior
I wrote a post (click through to read) about using extra virgin olive oil to moisturize dry hands. Granted it’s a little messy but it’s really effective. And all you need are just EVOO and a pair of disposable gloves.

Smooth silk hands
This is my simple recipe to keep your hands silky smooth:
- 5 teaspoons of brown sugar
- 2 teaspoons of honey
- 3 teaspoons of extra virgin oil

I found this really great for exfoliation and moisturizing as I don’t need to use a separate hand cream afterwards. Because I didn’t want to attract ants, I only used it on my hands. You can increase the amount made and use it as a body scrub too. And if you can get really fine granulated sugar, you can use it as a lip scrub too.

Emergency makeup remover
Okay, I don’t always use this but it’s during emergency when I run out of stuff to remove my eye makeup. Just pour a little onto a cotton pad and wipe. However, it is really oily, and so you’ll need a foaming cleanser to wash off. I don’t recommend using this for the entire face as it is too oily. It’ll work if you’re into the oil cleansing method where really hot water is used.

Other ways to use extra virgin cooking oil
I think there are tons of ways you can use the oil but I’m only sharing those I know or have tried personally. The oil can also be used to tame frizzy hair, soften cracked heels or hardened spots on your knees or elbows. You just need to think beyond cooking!

Share: what’s the must-have item in your bag?

I remember someone asking this question at a workshop I attended eons ago – what is the one item you must have with you when you’re out? So let me modify the question here a little for the VivaBellas reading this – what is the one beauty item you must have in your bag when you’re out?

Is it a lip balm? A lipstick? A foundation powder? A sunscreen? A handcream? A mirror? A hand sanitizer? A pack of tissue? Or something else?

Well, mine is a comb. Heh. Many people don’t know but I belong to that category that will potentially ask anyone I’ve just met: “is my hair messy”? Okay, okay, I don’t ask. Very often, I’ll just whip out my comb and brush my hair. Friends who know me well are not surprised that this is the first thing I do when I meet them. My hair must look neat at all times! So yes, I detest fan and strong wind that mess up my hair! I do try to comb my hair in private, like in the restrooms, but some times I really can’t and I’ll be whipping out my comb when I am:
- taking a crowded lift.
- traveling up or down an escalator.
- traveling in a crowded train.
- peering into the side mirror of a car.
- looking into my reflection at a retail store.

Ha. I think you get the idea. I can be walking and combing my hair too and if I am able, I’ll be glad to bring my comb when I’m in the middle of a swimming pool too.

So tell me, if you can only have one beauty item in your bag, what must it be?

Charles of the ritz perfect finish eyecolor Eat papaya to get rid of wrinkles & a round tummy

Some people seem to love papaya and that’s really wonderful for them! I know it’s a good fruit all right but it’s another thing altogether to want to eat this stuff. I’m sorry to say this but the smell and taste totally puts me off. The closest I can charles of the ritz perfect finish eyecolor get is to use paw paw balms! So I’m really losing out on the goodness of this fruit because it can help one reduce wrinkles, and at the same time, maintain a flat tummy.

Reduces inflammation and promotes skin healing
Papaya contains several unique protein-digesting enzymes including papain and chymopapain. These enzymes have been shown to help lower inflammation and to improve healing from burns. In addition, the antioxidant nutrients found in papaya, including vitamin C, vitamin E, and beta-carotene, are also very good at reducing inflammation. (source: WhFoods.com). So when taken frequently, papaya can help restore skin elasticity since vitamin C also helps the manufacture of collagen too. Another thing to note is that paw paw is well known for having antiseptic qualities too when applied topically and that’s the primary benefits of those paw paw balms.

Promotes a flatter tummy
Papain also aids protein digestion as it helps break down protein in the food you eat. I didn’t know too much about the connection between weight loss and papaya until Jo of Lolita mentioned to me and upon research, I found out that the potassium and fibre in papayas help to tighten the tummy. I can’t seem to locate any research backing this up but various websites on the Net do promote this information. But I remember Jo telling me that she lost weight eating this stuff so it must be able to work some magic.

Do you like papayas?
I don’t have a tummy issue but I would love to enjoy the anti-inflammatory benefits for better skin. However, I can never ever acquire the taste of eating papayas. How charles of the ritz perfect finish eyecolor about you ladies? Do you like papayas? Or are you like me, having a hard time smelling the fruit even?

Ah Yuan…Ah Yuan, can you wash my hair?

I know a number of you use Yuan Soaps from Taiwan, which are available at Unity Pharmacy and a number of organic stores in Singapore. However, are any of you using Yuan Shampoos too? I know the product exists but I’ve never seen it around. I only received these two samples recently through Reese, who distributes the Yuan range of products in Malaysia.

Yuan has introduced five types of shampoos for different hair types:
1. Lemon Shampoo(平衡净化)
2. Momoridca Shampoo(清凉疏风)
3. Mulberry&Chrysanthemum Shampoo(温和轻爽)
4. Swertia Shampoo(养润活化)
5. Tangerine Shampoo (洁净柔顺)
These shampoos are created to cleanse the scalp for the hair follicles to receive the nutrients from the plant extracts and Chinese herbs extracts. You won’t see silicones or the usual list of harsh sulfates. Plus, I learnt that the shampoos are 98% biodegradeable, and I suppose it means they’re non-polluting when they’re flushed down those water pipes right? So those benefits aside, how did they perform for my hair, which I always describe as – limp, fine with an oily scalp?

Yuan Tangerine Shampoo (洁净柔顺)

Main Ingredients: Mandarin,Orange, Bergamot,Petitgrain, Eucalyptus, Japanese Honeysuckle, Dandelion, Violet Herb, Chrysanthemum Sinense Flower, Semiagvilegia Adoxoides Root Extract

The Yuan Tangerine Shampoo has a nice citrus scent with a hint of herbal goodness. It doesn’t lather up a lot of foam so I had to wash my hair twice using this. Surprisingly, the second lather wasn’t so great either but my hair was quite clean after using it. Since there was no Yuan conditioner, I used my own. Okay, this one is really great for improving the silkiness of my hair. They truly looked and felt silky soft. However, I can’t say too much about deep cleansing. I have really oily scalp that needs cleansing daily and this one didn’t help much. My hair oiled quite quickly to my dismay. So I suppose this might work better for those with not so oily scalp but needs to improve the smooth factor for their hair.

Rating: 2.5 out of 5

Yuan Momoridca Shampoo(清凉疏风)

Main Ingredients: Deionized Water, Disoudium Cocoamphodiadetate, Glycerin, Rosemary, Grapefruit, Mint Oil, Momoridca Charantia Fruit, Lonicera Japonica Flower, Taraxacum Officinale, Viola Yedoenesis, Chrysanthemum Sinense Flower, Semiagvilegia Adoxoides Root Extract

Yuan Momoridca Shampoo did a better job for me. In fact, I probably would purchase this if I can get my hands on them in Singapore. I am not so keen on the strong minty smell in this one but my hair felt truly fresh and cool upon using this. It lathers better than the tangerine one but not exceptionally foamy either. I also shampooed my hair twice with this. And same thing, I used my own conditioner afterwards. As a whole, my hair looked fairly soft and manageable, not too flat either but the good thing was this one has good oil control. By the next morning, my hair still looked pretty acceptable.

Rating: 4 out of 5

Availability within and outside Malaysia
You can find out more information about Yuan Shampoos on Reese’s website. The shampoos are priced from RM75.50 to RM88.50 for each 250ml bottle, and available online or at a few retail spots within Malaysia. Like I mentioned, I’ve seen Yuan soaps around but not their range of shampoos yet. So if any of you have seen them being retailed in Singapore, do tell us where in the comments section.

Six different ways to apply skin care products

Recently, I placed an order for a product that I didn’t like so much in terms of application. I had some problems applying the product the first time but because I had loved the results from using it, I decided to re-order the product and then apply it a different way. This first time around, I blended the product into my palm and then patted on my face using my fingers instead of sweeping the lotion over my face! It was a lot easy and better this time! So this got me thinking of writing this post about the different ways we can apply our skin care products.

1. Apply a pea size amount with your fingers
This should be the most common way where you squeeze a pea size amount into the center of your palm, and then using the fingertips of the other hand to apply onto your face. This is probably the method I use most frequently and I typically start by applying the product onto both my cheek area before my chin area, my forehead and then moving down to my nose. I usually use this when applying face cream and sunscreen.

2. Warm the cream using the center of your palm
This method is good for really thick cream, which I learnt when I was using Creme de Lar Mer a couple of years back. Because the cream is so thick, you should use a pea size amount or even lesser, place it into the center of your palm then rub, or pat both your palms together to “warm up the cream”. Certain creams may liquify but others may just turn a little less creamy, which allows you to easily apply onto your face without the thick consistency.

3. Apply 5 dots on your face and blend
I hope I won’t offend anyone by saying this but somehow, I associate this method with the old school of skincare. In the past, many beauty consultants seem to encourage this approach of skin care application and it’s even stated on the instructions of some products. The 5 dots denote applying a small blob of cream on your two cheek area, your nose, your forehead and your chin. I believe it is still a common skin care application technique and I find myself going back to this approach when I apply my face mask. However, I tend to apply more than usual when I use this 5 dots method.

4. Pat the cream or lotion into your face
This is a common way to apply facial toner if you don’t use a cotton pad. Pour the toner into the center of your palm and then using your fingers to lightly pat or tap into your face. Actually, I’m not very gentle whenever I use this method. I literally slap my face in an energetic fashion whenever I apply my face toner. It’s kind of for fun and at the same time, I believe it helps to aid blood circulation and increase absorption of the toner.

5. Press the lotion or oil into your face
If you’ve use some of the Japanese lotions, then you should be quite familiar with this technique. Again, you’ll pour the lotion into the center of your palm and then using the other palm, press both hands together and then continue to press the lotion into all areas of your face. I use this method when applying my facial oil.

6. Massage the cream, lotion or oil into your face
This is actually an extension of any of the above methods, followed by a more intensive massage on your face. I do that using my facial oil. After I have pressed the oil onto my entire face, I then proceed to massage the oil on my cheek area, using one or two hands in an upward, outward sweeping fashion starting from my jawline to the area near my ear.

So how do you normally apply your skin care products? Are there any other ways you can share with us?
