Rimmel extreme definition ultimate lash seperating mascara Phenomena fashion showcase @ PARCO next NEXT

While I know there are some efforts to promote the local fashion industry, I hadn’t realized that we actually have a retail platform specially created to promote designs from 24 aspiring local fashion designers until I checked out PARCO next NEXT over at PARCO Marina Bay store last evening. I’ll say the concept rimmel extreme definition ultimate lash seperating mascara is cool because I do like the idea of supporting local labels.

I was actually there for the Phenomena Fashion Preview but was in a rush afterwards and so didn’t check out the labels properly. I should have because there was an exclusive privilege aka special discount for guests that evening. Anyway, I made a mental note to drop by soon especially since the designers have unveiled some interesting festive collections.

Although I was in a rush, but I noticed this particular label, JUJUBE, because of its ecological apparel design and it even has bags woven from 100% recycled beverage packaging. Looks familiar? Definitely reminds me of Ecoist!

One of the highlights of the evening was the PARCO next NEXT Designer Of The Year 2010 Competition. The winner was Mun Foong who creates the A.K.A Wayward label. Her designs have a distinct flavor but unfortunately, were for men and not ladies. But I have to say the male model was rimmel extreme definition ultimate lash seperating mascara quite an eye candy!

Anyway, I was wondering if any of you enjoy fashion shows? I do not mind fashion shows and am usually quite intrigued by how models strut their stuff on the runway when all eyes are on them. And because of where I was seated, my attention was also naturally drawn to their legs and I noticed that while many of them have long and slim legs, not all their legs are smooth as one of them had visible scars and marks. I really think models owe it to their profession to keep their legs looking fabulous. And speaking of legs, one model had to put up with wearing a pair of shoes that were so ill fitting for her! I think many of the guests were watching anxiously as she trotted down, wondering if she could keep those shoes on as they were obviously too large for her – like some little girl wearing her mom’s shoes.

But nah, no shoes were left on the runway…she was good as she managed to keep them on even though she was obviously uncomfortable!

Maybelline everfresh pressed powder Share: do you wash your hands for skin’s sake?

Hello VivaBellas! How are you this morning? I am feeling so brilliant and glorious! Woo hoo! There are so many things to be happy about! For one, my skin was breaking out a little last week but it’s all good now. I’ve maybelline everfresh pressed powder actually been changing my skin care gradually this season because of some new products introduced to me. Just the other day, while applying my skin care products, I noticed that I was washing my hands in between applications quite a bit these days. I never used to do that. Okay, let me explain what I’m trying to say here.

When applying complimentary products
I never used to wash my hands in between product applications. After I cleanse my face with my cleanser and after I’ve patted my face dry with a face towel, I’ll always start off by applying my toner with my bare hands. Next, I’ll apply an essence. Since both are in liquid form, I do not wash my hands in between or after that as I feel my hands are clean. I will then proceed to apply a serum and my facial oil and I don’t wash my hands in between both applications either. My rationale is that these are all products for the face and the consistency of each do not interfere with the other. In fact, they are complimentary.

When applying a product with a different texture and smell
However, I recently incorporated another serum for my neck and because of that, I noticed myself washing my hands because I dab a bit of the serum around my mouth area too before applying my usual facial serum and oil. I wash my hands with water because I didn’t want the smell and the serum to mix with my other skin care products during application. It’s kind of strange actually considering I’ll still be applying my other skin care products over this neck serum. But I just feel more comfortable washing my hands after using the serum.

When applying products for different areas
I also do not wash my hands when I proceed to apply my body lotion afterwards. Because I think whatever I use on my face would benefit my body anyway. But I sometimes forget and apply my body lotion before I finish applying my facial products and when that happens, I’ll wash my hands before I use my face care products as I definitely don’t want the body cream to be applied on my face through mixing with my face care products.

How about you ladies? Do you find yourself washing your hands a lot during your skin care applications? maybelline everfresh pressed powder

Dagny & Lane Ionic Mineral Skincare review

A couple of weeks ago, I mentioned that I was impressed by an eye product just days after trying it. The product is Dagny & Lane Vita C Eye Gel, which contains both vitamin A & C. I am usually reluctant to use vitamin A on my face but having read so much raves about this ingredient, I decided to give it a go for my eye area. I won’t describe the results too much but instead, I’ll leave you to decide based on the before and after pictures I’ve posted.

Dagny & Lane is based in US and their products are ionic mineral infused formulas that contain a mix of some organic and natural ingredients. They have products for both men and women and their woman’s skincare line uses a 5-step daily regimen. Another selling point of their product is that they are formulated using targeted delivery systems that help the ingredients better penetrate into our skin. These products that I receive are complimentary from the company.

Vita C Eye Gel 1oz US$35

Ingredients: Organic Herbal Infusion, Organic Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice (Aloe Vera), Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate (Vitamin C), Organic Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba Oil), Copper, Zinc, Magnesium, Cucumis Sativus (Cucumber Distillate), Silk Protein Amino Acid Blend (Sodium L-Pyrrolidone Carboxylate, Sodium Lactate, L’Arginine, L-Aspartic Acid, L-Pyrrolidonecarboxylic Acid, Glycine, L-Alanine, L-Serine, L-Valine, L-Proline, L-threonine, L-Isoleucine, L-Histidine, L-Phenylalanine), Hyaluronic Acid, Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, (2s)-2-Amino-5-guanidinopentanoic Acid, Retinyl Palmitate (Vitamin A), Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Organic Glycyrrhiza Glabra (Licorice), Organic Vinca Major (Periwinkle), Ethylhexyl Glycerin, Phenoxyethanol.

This eye gel is said to provide up to eight-fold antioxidant protection, 96% reduction of sunburned cells, and prevention of the formation of free radicals in sun exposed skin. Other benefits include fading of sun spots and discoloration, refining skin texture and reducing wrinkle formation as well as minimizing existing wrinkles.

This product gives a warm, tingling sensation upon application. It does not sting though. And actually during the first few days I started using this product, I thought my eyes were less puffy looking. However, it seems the puffiness remained somewhat and I couldn’t see more improvements beyond the first week of usage. However, what surprised me was the reduction of the fine lines. I am only using this eye gel in the night and I’ve been using it for less than a month and yet, the reduction is rather noticeable.

I won’t say more but I leave you to decide if I’m exaggerating. But the spots remain and I’m hoping that this product will erase some of them in time to come. The thing I don’t like about the product is the pump. It is a little clumsy in my opinion as I usually end up squirting a lot more eye gel than required.

Rating: 4 out of 5 hearts

Gentle Berry Scrub 2oz US$24

Ingredients: Organic Herbal Infusion,Organic Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice (Aloe Vera), Olea Europaea (Olive Seed), Jojoba Beads, Hibiscus Sabdraffia (HIbiscus Buds) Cranberry Fibers, Organic Vaccinium Angustifolium (Blueberry), Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrytlate Crosspolymer, (2s)-2-Amino5 guanidinopentanoic Acid, Punica Gradatum (Pomegranate), Copper, Zinc, Magnesium, Citrus Aurantium (Petit Grain Essential Oil), Organic Rheum Palmatum (Rhubarb) Retinyl Palmitate (Vitamin A), Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Citrus Nobilis (Tangerine Essential Oil), Ethylhexyl Glycerin, Phenoxyethanol.

This scrub contains ionic minerals and loads of antioxidants like blueberries, pomegranate, rhubarb, cranberries and vitamins for free-radical defense. The smell is somewhat strong, and reminds me of chilli. However, it doesn’t feel spicy on my skin of course. In terms of results, I can’t see much of a difference. But I do concede that this is a rather gentle facial scrub and I like to use it once or twice a week before applying my hydrating mask.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 hearts

Lip Balms 0.7oz US$4.50

Ingredients: Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Beeswax, Persea gratissima (Avocado) Oil, Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Butter, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter), Copper, Zinc, Magnesium, Natural Flavor Oil, & Sweetener.

I actually haven’t tried all the lip balms. The blueberry tart one I tried smells (and taste) delicious though! It is very moisturizing and does help to hydrate my lips for a long period. Nice to leave on during bedtime for softer lips the morning after!

Rating: 5 out of 5 hearts

Overall summary
I have to say Dagny & Lane Ionic Mineral Skincare are pretty promising, based on what I have tested. I like the fact that they try to use as many natural ingredients as possible with a mix of active ingredients with anti-aging properties. Additionally, I was quite surprised that the prices are rather reasonable. For the other products within the range, check out their website. You can also enjoy a generous 20% discount off your purchases by using code dl20 during checkout.

Best foundation make up My $2 efficient & effective makeup brush cleaner

Back in June, I made a quick comparison of this Diaso makeup tool detergent with the Pigeon Bottle Nipple & Vegetable Liquid Cleanser and mentioned that the latter was more effective. It’s been some months now and I thought I’ll best foundation make up do a quick update on how I’ve been liking the Diaso detergent so far.

Although the Pigeon Bottle Nipple & Vegetable Liquid Cleanser is effective, I found that it works better when I soak the brushes in it with a mixture of warm water. Hence, whenever I’m in a hurry, I turn to the Diaso detergent instead as it only takes me around 3 minutes or lesser to wash my brush.

This Diaso detergent is stated to be used for puff and sponge but it sure best foundation make up works well for my brushes. There is no soaking required as I pour some of the detergent directly on my brush and gently use my fingers to remove the foundation powder. The powder is quickly removed in one wash and my brush looks clean again without any residue of the powder anymore. If I feel my brush is still oily, then I might do with a second washing.

The 80ml bottle cost S$2 at Diaso and it has lasted me quite awhile so definitely very economical. But then again, I don’t use it every week. I suppose it’ll run out much faster if I wash my brushes weekly…and yeah, I should really be washing my brushes MORE frequently!

Neutrogena visibly firm eye treatment concealer A love that grows gradually: EDM Flat Top Brush

I don’t know about you neutrogena visibly firm eye treatment concealer but when it comes to love stories, I’m not one who is sold on love at first sight.  Well, not that I don’t like love at first sight or that I don’t believe it but I think a love story that grows gradually, especially out of dislike or hatred at the beginning comes across as more heart wrenching and poignant. Like Elizabeth Bennet and Mr Darcy in Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice:

Jane Bennett: ‘My dearest sister, now be serious. I want to talk very seriously. Let me know every thing that I am to know, without delay. Will you tell me how long you have loved him?’

Elizabeth Bennett: ‘It has been coming on so gradually, that I hardly neutrogena visibly firm eye treatment concealer know when it began. But I believe I must date it from my first seeing his beautiful grounds at Pemberley.’

Before you start to think that this is a post about literature, I’m just being emotional about my Everday Minerals Flat Top Brush. A year back, I reviewed this brush and kind of dismissed it as an average performing brush even when everyone else was raving about it. Yeah, there was no love then. I didn’t like it much but as I started using it more and more, I realized that I’ve fallen deeply in love with this brush.  It’s the one brush I’ve actually been using on a daily basis now.

I think it didn’t work so well for me initially because I was using it with mineral foundation and the brush gave me a very sheer coverage.  I then tried this brush with compact foundation and the initial reaction was still so-so. However, over time, I started to like using this brush more and more because it really yields a more natural coverage without streaking or caking compared to my other kabuki brushes.  It also does not accentuate my pores like the others. And today, this is one brush I can’t live without now!  What a change of heart right? I don’t even know when that started but it must be at least some six months after I started using it. This must be true love then…for a love that grows gradually will be strong, steady and lasting. HA!  I am now even considering purchasing a second one because I can’t use this whenever I take it for a wash.

So my dear VivaBellas, do you believe in love at first sight or a gradual kind of love? And do you also have a beauty product that you’ve grown to love neutrogena visibly firm eye treatment concealer very much over time?

Marie Veronique Organics sun protection products

Some of you have been tempted to get the sun protection products from Marie Veronique Organics after reading my reviews and have asked me to give you recommendations to the products as you’re unsure which to choose of the three. So here are my comparison of their three products.  As a whole, their products have worked rather well to protect my fair skin tone.  However, do note that I’m Asian with three layers of melanin, and hence, I’m actually less prone to getting sunburn.

Moisturizing Face Screen, SPF 30 60ml US$40 (click for detailed review)
This is by far, my favorite product from Marie Veronique Organics and also, my favorite daily sunscreen. I started using it when it was called Marie Veronique Organics Creme de Soleil and even though I must sound like a broken record but still, I want to say that this is actually my all-time favorite product! I use it daily under the MVO Anti-Aging Oil and the no tint version is just perfect for my fair skin tone. The texture of this product is almost lotion like and if you blend it with your fingers, it’s not entirely smooth but has a slight powdery texture to it. However, it applies well without any grittiness, greasiness or dryness. It has a faint whitecast on my fair skin tone that is only visible upon closer scrutiny.

The smell is herbal like and is pleasant to me although I know that some users who are scent sensitive find it heavy. I think this product works well for those with normal to oily skin type. If you have dry skin, this might feel a tad drying because of the high zinc oxide content (20.6%) – I say this because of some feedback given by other users.

My preference is for the no tint version. While I can take to the light tint version and that works great as a sort of foundation base, but it makes my skin a tad darker with certain brands of foundation.

Anti-Aging Day Serum, SPF 20 60ml US$60 (click for detailed review)
This is a luxury product to me. I think it works on a deeper level to repair sun damaged skin too since it is a serum. Moreoever, the ingredients like red raspberry seed oil, coffee fruit extract, Yangu and Cherry Kernel Seed Oil provide excellent ultra violet protection and antioxidant benefits. The complimentary bottle I received from the company was the light tint version but I think the no tint version would have worked well for me as it would have complimented the Moisturizing Face Screen. I did get a small sample of the no tint version and I found it nice to apply it under my Moisturizing Face Screen. But I can’t use too much of it as the combination of high zinc oxide content from both products (18% from Anti-Aging Day Serum) make my combination skin a little dry. So I would only use it on days when the UV index is very high or when I need more sun protection. I also use it on its own when I’m indoors mostly.

The smell of this product is very strong although I rather like it. The texture is thin and diluted and it’s easy to spread on the skin. In fact, I find the no tint version should work well for fair to medium skin tone because it does not leave much of a whitecast.

Overall, I’ll say this is a nice to have product if your budget can afford. Otherwise, the Moisturizing Face Screen is good enough for daily protection and defense.

Kid Safe Screen, SPF 25 81ml US$19 (click for detailed review)
Some readers have commented that the MVO Face Screen is expensive. In that case, I would recommend you to try this product instead if you skin isn’t dry. This is formulated as a sunscreen for kids but really, anyone can use it as the zinc oxide content is 19% and that offers pretty high protection. However, the ingredient list is shorter as it is meant to be a sun protection product and does not provide anti-aging or antioxidant benefits.

This product has a scent of what I think is xantham gum; it’s not unpleasant but some might find the smell odd. The texture of Kid Safe Screen is thick and creamy but it is not greasy at all. In fact, it blends in well, does not leave a white cast and is matt to the touch. It can be drying when applied on its own so this is best used in conjunction with a body lotion, or a moisturizer/facial oil when used on the face. I currently use this product on my boy when he heads to the pool for a swim and I also use it to protect my hands. Frequent re-application is required when you’re using this for swimming.

Overall summary
I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again – I love the offerings from Marie Veronique Organics because their products meet my criteria of natural formulations with no toxic ingredients, chemical synthetics, fragrances, waxes, silicones or alcohol. Please note that I started purchasing their products first and the complimentary products only came later when the company learnt of my earlier reviews. If you ask me to recommend from the three products, then my vote definitely goes to the Moisturizing Face Screen.   I’m glad that many of my readers who have tried the Moisturizing Face Screen are happy with the product. Those who indicated that the product did not work well for them mentioned about the product being drying. Hence, I suspect that their sun protection products may not work as well if you have dry skin type. In terms of price point, I agree that their products are not the most affordable especially if we factor in the shipping from States, but I personally find the Moisturizing Face Screen reasonably priced for the ingredients it contains.

The art of Anna Sui cosmetic accessories

I am a fan of Anna Sui fashion but alas, I don’t own any of her pieces. The closest I can get my hands on are her cosmetics. But you know me, I’m not big on makeup and so I’ve never used any of her products. Yeah, I know from reading some of the reviews that her makeup products are great. But I would always go over to the counter, pick up one of the products, admire it for how pretty it looks and then just put it right back. Truly, I must have thought they were too pretty to be used. LOL.

Anyway, here are some of the pretty accessories and makeup I received from the Anna Sui Rockin’ Wonderland under the 2010 Christmas Collection.

This beauty box is really pretty and the design sort of reminds me of the card of spades. It’s retailing at S$35 and you can use it to keep all your beauty goodies or even jewelry. I haven’t figured out what I want to use it for; maybe I’ll use it to store some personal keepsakes.

This rock chick style of mirror charm is kind of cute. If you like star studded accessories, this one will surely appeal to you. And because it’s magnetic, it is extremely “attractive”. Ha!

I’m not so fond of cosmetic pouches and especially not so of those that bear the logo of the brand. But I have to say the logo on this white one is kind of unique. It comes free with the makeup collection retailing at S$84 and comprise of an eye gel, lip gloss and cheek color. I say the black one looks far better.

So do any of you like Anna Sui as a brand? If so, what are the items you like from Anna Sui? The fashion? The makeup? The fragrance? The accessories? Or just the others?

Lip makeup Avène Thermal Spring Water: my dry skin savior

Recently I had a bad tummy and I couldn’t drink lip makeup a lot of water. As a result, I suffered from dehydration and my skin became very dry. My cheeks felt taut and tight and was extremely uncomfortable.  As I had already moisturized my face, I wasn’t keen to slather more moisturizer for fear of clogging up the pores. So what did I do to relieve my skin of the dry feeling? I decided to use my trusty Avene Thermal Spring Water facial spray.

Ratings from Makeupalley
I have been using a few brands of facial sprays; common ones I use are from Evian and Vichy. However, I still found Avene to be the best as it provides me with instant soothing. And when I say instant, I mean INSTANT. No more dryness! No wonder it received 4.3 out of 5 rating from 302 reviewers at Makeupalley. Even Tine of Beautyholicsanonymous mentioned that it was one of the products that saved her skin from wreaking havoc recently.

Unique composition to restore skin’s natural balance
This thermal spring lip makeup water packaged in a sterile unit is ideal for sensitive, fragile skin because it contains a unique composition of silicate and trace elements that have been demonstrated by over 300 scientific studies to soothe, soften and restore skin’s natural balance. In fact, it was used since 1743 in the Hydrotherapy Center to treat serious dermatological conditions such as atopic dermatitis, psoriasis and eczema (source). And because it comes with pH 7.5, the water does not sting or burn skin.

Directions for using
Avene Thermal Spring Water is great to be used whenever your skin is irritated such as:
- after excessive sun exposure
- after dermalogical treatments
- after waxing
- after shaving

In fact, I would even go a step further to recommend that you use it as a toner to mist on prior to applying your moisturizer. And one important lesson I learnt over the years is that I should always use a tissue paper to pat dry after using a facial spray or my skin would become drier with the evaporation – this does not apply when I use it prior to moisturizing. For other ways to use a mist, you can also read my post on 10 different ways to use a facial mist spray.

Price and availability
This product is readily available at leading pharmacies and the 50ml bottle cost S$9.90. I like the small lip makeup bottle because it is portable and I can always carry it in my bag. And even though it is formulated for sensitive skin, this product is actually suitable for all skin types.

So are any of you also loving Avene Thermal Spring Water?
