BLEU

Story

Eleven years after Allure pour Homme, Chanel proposes Bleu, a fresh, masculine composition blending aromatic notes, citrus and woody barks. A reflection of elegance and freedom, Bleu is a fragrance that makes men want to ‘go off to conquer the world’. Directed by Martin Scorsese, the ad features actor Gaspard Ulliel going off to conquer the heart of a woman he wants to surprise in the heart of New York City. Because at Chanel, the house explains, ‘everything is inscribed and described in freedom’. Sleek and streamlined, with a very Chanel spirit, the Bleu bottle is a dark, almost black shade of blue.

Description

This fresh, woody aromatic scent opens with a sparkling note of citrus jazzed up with pink pepper and peppermint. A warm note emanates from the heart, thanks to cedar paired with vetiver and a floral hint of jasmine. Ginger comes to reinforce the slight bitterness of grapefruit. In the trail, woody waves of sandalwood twine with patchouli and frankincense. Perfumer: Jacques Polge.

Range

Eau de Toilette 1.7 and 3.4 oz.; After-Shave Lotion 3.4 oz.; Deodorant 3.4 oz.

Bottle

The square glass bottle is garbed in a deep, almost black shade of navy blue. Elegantly understated, the bottle is graced with a round, black, magnetic cabochon. A spare, silvery typeface graces the front of the bottle.

King Tut – DSH perfumes (Patty)

King Tut – DSH perfumes (Patty)

August 16, 2010

King Tut exhibit is in Denver, has been for a month or two, and Dawn Spencer Hurwitz did a series of perfumes, based on scents that would have been around in that time period for the modern Egyptian man and woman to paste on.

If you’re thinking these would be heavy on incense and other “burial-type” oils, you’d be right!  I’ve been playing around with the Megaleion, Keni, Antiu, all heavy incense-type fragrances, dancing to  that Steve Martin Egyptian song – was that him? -  and they are really fun to wear to to think that perfumery has been around for so long, and we all still love our incenses.  The beauty of the group that I would so wear heavily right now is the 1,000 Lilies AKA Susinon.

Donna reviewed these a while back at Perfume Smellin’  Things, which is what intrigued me to sample them to begin with.

Megaleion, despite being based on a scent from not just a few hundred years back is pretty great to wear now. It does have a green aspect to it, outside of the resins, that makes it feel a little more modern.   By modern, I mean it could have been made in the last 80 years.  Well, what do you expect?  It’s got a little bit of a vintage Dior or Nina Ricci feel to it.  Notes are olibanum, pine resin oil, cassia, cinnamon, balsam of gilead, cedarwood, lemongrass, spikenard, costus root, sweet flag and myrrh.

Keni is all delicious cinnamon and cardamom spiciness on the open.  There’s more to it than that that enriches it in the drydown, mellowing it out, giving it some softer contrasts, but if you don’t like cinnamon, well, don’t them let mummify you in this.  Notes are cassia, cinnamon, myrrh and pine resin oil.

Antiu is, as Donna notes, serious bitter almond and galbanum out of the pipe. It is nicely fierce!  I like that in a perfume, there’s just no faffing about trying to decide what to be when it grows up.  There’s some nice touches with lemongrass and honey that float around this as it dries down, turning a softer woody resinous green. It softens out that fierce open, which is okay, but I really  kinda loved that open a lot.  Notes are galbanum, bitter almond, cardamom, lemongrass, balsam of Gilead, sweet flag, honey, wine, pine resin, myrrh.  Of the three incense-based ones, Antiu is the one I’d wear happily anywhere and often.

Susinon or 1000 Lilies is pure beautiful white greenish spiced floral.  Lily, lotus, iris, sweet flag, cardamom, saffron, honey, cinnamon, wine, salt, myrrh.  White, shimmering, it’s definitely white floral, but not ovewhelmingly sweet or cloying.  There’s this soft purity about it that has me pretty enchanted.  There’s something about it that reminds me just a little of Shalini, it’s like a little burst of sunshine.

Are there any other historical-based perfumes out there?  I was trying to think about this and recall some, and maybe I’m just stuck on museum-type ones and there are others like this. Am I wrong?  Based on just the list of notes, if you were a super-rich Egyptian with a waiting sarcophagus, which one would you be covered in?

Oud : Fragrance Note and Perfume Reviews

to Tom Ford, it appears either as a central note or as a main component of a woody accord. At this rate, we might even see Bath & Body Works “Warm Vanilla Oudh”! On the one hand, the popularity of this complex note is surprisingly, for it is certainly not an easy scent to appreciate—sharp, animalic, pungent, intense. On the other, it is an exciting backnote for modern fragrances, lending a new dimension to the compositions. It pairs well with the traditional oriental notes, from rose to vanilla, as well as with the crisp modern ambers and the effervescent hersperidic notes. It should be noted that oud found in many fragrances is not the precious natural oil, which is not only quite rare, but also quite expensive. Still, a number of oud bases I have smelled have an interesting character that captures some of the features of the natural material, which is rich and seductive.

Therefore, I would like to give an overview of 20 or so of the oud dominated fragrances on the market and to highlight a few others to explore.

In the Garden

California native sage is the predominant fragrance outdoors in the garden this morning. Indoors I've got the fresh crop of Jasmine sambac blossoms which is infusing the studio with their heaven scent.

A few days ago I went out to get some oak leaves for shots of Q solid perfume and I noticed the oaks already have small green acorns. These little gems have become props for my new photos, although I am not 100% satisfied with the shots yet.

Meanwhile, in another area of the garden, there has been lots of drama in Bee-ville, which I will be reporting in the upcoming Hive Report.

Summer malaise causes me to list some top favorites

I've been indifferent to fragrance lately. Sure, I've found a few new gems the past few months, but overall I think I'm having the summer doldrums. Around this time of year, and more often sooner than this, I get bored stiff with my fresh, zesty, green, summer choices. I don't mean to put myself in a fragrant rut, but I can't bear to wear anything heavy or oriental when it's hot outside.

Just for the fun of it, I thought I'd list some of my ultimate favorite fragrances today. To remind myself why I love perfume so much, and try to shrug off this scented malaise I'm in:

(alphabetical order)

Acqua di Parma Iris Nobile
Angel and Alien Liqueur de Parfum
Annick Goutal Ambre Fetiche
Annick Goutal Grand Amour
Annick Goutal Heure Exquise
Annick Goutal Le Chevrefeuille

Yves Saint Laurent Nu edp
Yves Saint Laurent Opium in pure parfum

And last but not least, my #1 HG of all time:
Teo Cabanel Alahine

I could go on, but I think I’ll stop here.

Do you have a list of top favorites that bring you back to perfume time and again even when you’ve lost a little of the passion?

EDITED on 8/9/10 to say: how could I possibly forget 1000 by Jean Patou?! I must have been half asleep. 1000 is my #2 HG after Alahine. I feel better now that I've fixed this outrage

If it smells good and enough people like it and buy it all the time, , constantly, it becomes a classic

It's in those terms that Rochelle Bloom, president of the Fragrance Foundation, the educational non-profit center devoted to fine fragrance, explains the fact that 7 out of the 10 top sellers in the US have remained the same in the last 10 years. The notiong of "modern classic" thus defined. The only thing remaining to be clarified is what smells "good". Apparently Forbes reports several

Andy Warhol’s Montauk

Story

After the success of Bond No9 series of Warhol collectible eau de parfum, Montauk is already the fifth fragrance in this collection. Montauk, a little seaside city in New York State was Andy Warhol’s favorite ‘getaway retreat from downtown New York’. Montauk offers a relaxing landscape of ‘bracing aquatic air, pristine sand dunes and crashing ocean waves’. Bond No9 Andy Warhol’s Montauk is a unisex summer fragrance that gives a modern approach of beach scents. A fragrance that reveals the duality between rural and urban, Montauk is a real trip in ‘Warhol’s forays to Long Island farthest reach’. For more information: www.bondno9.com

Description

The fragrance opens with fresh and tangy notes of bergamot and blueberry. The heart is a sheer floral mix of honeysuckle, lily of the valley and hyacinth. The woodsy base blends oak, driftwood and amber.

Range

Eau de Parfum 1.7 oz / 50 ml and 3.4 oz / 100 ml.

Bottle

The star shaped bottled is adorned with Warhol’s iconic sunsets. Two types of bottles are proposed. ‘One features a chrome yellow and a gentle blue sun disc, centered between misty shades of pink and blue. The other bottle depicts two versions of a washed-out, corona’ed blue sun, surrounded by deeper, stormier, otherworldly pinks and blues’ (shown: second bottle).

Spinning Plates: The Latest, the Newest, the Bestest, and More!

Recently, I started putting together a project.Let me rephrase that: I started putting together another project, I should say. I put feelers out to some of my favorite writers/bloggers, wondering whether they'd be interested in participating with me, and some of them responded. Others didn't. When I asked one who had responded whether he thought I had the right address for someone who hadn't,

Scent of the Day: Grace

In the midst of pouring a 1 gram vial of Gracing the Dawn for a customer I decided to put some on since I hadn't worn this one in over a week. Today I am experiencing some spice black pepper notes in the opening which I hadn't picked up on before.

As I walked from my studio into my husband's he remarked, "Wow, something smells REALLY good!" I thought, hmmm, could it be? So I put my wrist out for him to smell, his second remark, "That's a beautiful one." Conclusion: Gracing the Dawn has some nice silage girlfriends.

Apologies to all the members of the Faery Ring, your samples are going out in the next few days. I got hung up on making your packages really pretty visually.

Fragrance - the essence of life and some archetypes

Once upon a time, in the garden of Eden, between the Tree of Life and the Tree of Knowledge there was another plant, but few were able to see. It was green and often took the appearance of a climbing snake above the water of life. Her name was Divinia fragrans and she was an epiphytic orchid, shaped in the purest "Art Nouveau" style, sitting very high above the ground, between the trees almost like a heart (it was actually only one tree). This unusual plant "spoke" only at dawn when her highly scented petals were whispering an invitation to birds to taste the fruits of the tree and spread the seeds in the garden. Sometime Divinia was protecting the tree with the most frightening odor.
This unknown flower was the origin of all fragrances and when the first inhabitants of the Paradise were sent away, it was the scent of the garden they missed the most - The Divinia - the "invisible" plant hidden in the tree. Scent is the essence of life and, under its most sublime form, the fragrance, it is the vague souvenir of the Lost Paradise.

Gathering Blue

Sometimes when I sit to write a post for the blog I find myself in a chaos of inspired imagery leading me from one thing to another in a frenzied state. I usually can tell from the energy of it that there will be an interesting intersection transpiring at some point. All I need to do is faithfully follow it, even if the end does not reveal itself immediately.

Such was the case yesterday morning, just after returning from taking Eve over to the Theatricum Botanicum for her first performance of Much Ado About Nothing. I checked in at Etsy to see what was happening with sales at my shop and was mesmerized by a beautiful photo. The image, by artisan Lisa Jordan, was of a cluster of felted acorns on wood with an autumn leaf (pictured above). I hearted the photo and began to build an Etsy treasury inspired by the image titled A Rich Patina for Autumn.

As is the case when I make treasuries I contact the featured individuals to alert them that they are in the treasury. I then went about the very busy day with the intention to photograph Q solid perfume in a way that captured some of the feel of Lisa Jordan's felted acorn image. I went outside in the late afternoon looking for a piece of wood to bring into the house for the shoot. Instead I found a log that I was using in the garden as a design element amongst the native plants. Since the bottom of the log was covered with dirt, spiders and leaves I choose to do the photo shoot outside. Here are the results...

Today, while editing the above photos, I received back a thank you message from Lisa. I clicked on her shop buttom within the convo and decided to send her the new photo of Q solid natural perfume that she inspired. We got into a little message exchange which led me to her lil fish blog and opened the duirway to Ms. Jordan's vibrant artistic life. Upon seeing her post on a natural dye bath with mushroom and lobster I immediately knew I had met a kindred spirit, in fact her dye baths look like my tinctures and infusion! Reading about her process made me think of one of my favorite novels Gathering Blue, which spiraled down another worm hole.

This bridge led me to discover that Lois Lowry, the author of Gathering Blue, has a blog and that she was inspired by my compatriot Jorge Luis Borges when she wrote The Giver.

So much beauty and interweaving creative paths...like the richly colored robe that Kira finds herself restoring in Gathering Blue.

Gentille Alouette Custom Perfume - Round I

Thursday morning. I'm in Gastown with a duffel bag containing roughly 400 vials of volatile essences. This is going to be the first round of creating a custom perfume for Gentille Alouette, a tiny boutique that opened about a year ago by fashion and costume designer Eliza Lau. Gentille Alouette also carries apparel by other indie and local designers, wearable art and unique jewelry pieces.

Eliza is a die-hard perfumista. We met at Make It Vancouver and she fell for my perfumes on the spot. On her first visit to my studio she confessed to me her life-long dream (or as she calls it - her "bucket list") has been to create her own custom scent. When I hear stuff like that I don’t know what to say – I am just awe-struck as to why she has picked me. And I feel humbled and at the same time really excited to work with someone that is so passionate about perfume. It’s rare!

On that visit, she also told me that her favourite notes are violet and orange blossom. With my hyperactive olfactory imagination, I immediately imagine how that would smell and envision a perfume that would smell like a cross between Viola and Zohar… But I must not get carried away. We have to do this properly and explore all the essences that Eliza holds near and dear.

So, that very Thursday last week, the purpose of our get-together at the shop was exactly this: to begin the process of hand-picking the most gorgeous essences, the ones that Eliza has the strongest connection with and feels that would be most suitable for what she has envisioned for Gentille Alouette’s perfume.

I enter the shop. Eliza just got back from a “weekend” the Sunshine Coast (retailers will hardly ever take the real weekend off like normal people) and she’s all happy and relaxed. Édith Piaf’s Non, je ne regrette rien is playing in the background. A most befitting soundtrack for the little shop’s settings and also for the scent that Eliza envisions – seductive floral with a retro wink to the grand dame’s era. We ambark on a journey that will take nearly 2 hours – picking the scents that together will sing the sparrow’s song in harmony… It’s an adventure for both of us: neither of us really knows where this journey is going to lead us. But we both know we will turn whatever we find on our journey into a beautiful and exciting new perfume.

Without this process, creating the perfume will be very much the perfumer’s work without much involvement except verbally from the person commissioning it. I intend to do no shortcuts with this perfume because if it’s Eliza’s dream, than we must make the creation itself something to dream about and look forward to…
